In January, our team was able to join farmers, end-users, and industry friends in Memphis for the 46th annual MIRC conference. Every year the gathering brings us together with a common goal to discuss research projects, consider new ideas, and ultimately look at ways to improve the North American mint industry. Over the past three years we have had our very own Jeff Johnson lead the MIRC as Chairman of the Board. His industry insight and mint expertise has helped guide discussions, set a strategic focus, and promote a successful future.
A common discussion year after year revolves around the challenges with Verticillium Wilt. Dr. Isabelle Henry gave a great presentation on natural breeding of Black Mitcham peppermint and the progress that is being made to hopefully develop a resistant plant. There is a lot of optimism in this research and development work to have a non-GMO peppermint that can stay in the field longer and promote the sustainability of peppermint.
Concerning sustainability, the MIRC has formed a new committee with a focus on the carbon footprint of mint. A research proposal regarding carbon sequestration is under review and could highlight some interesting data for the industry to use. Additionally, Dr. Troy Peters gave a talk on improving distillation efficiencies, which ties in with the focus to look at sustainability across various aspects of the mint industry.
What about new markets? There is a growing demand for natural pesticides and herbicides that are plant based. Harpe Bioherbicide Solutions gave a great presentation on the efficacy of mint against various weeds. It’s exciting to see what companies are developing to deliver solutions to the market utilizing mint oils.
